2023 Conference Call for Papers

Information Systems Division

The Information Systems Division focuses on original scientific research regarding how information is generated, processed, and distributed, and how individuals and society are affected by information in various contexts (e.g., health, politics, technologies, education, business, advertising, culture, journalism). All levels of analysis (e.g., intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, societal) are welcomed.

The Division prides itself on developing a conference environment encouraging dynamic interaction between scholars with data and ideas to share. Most papers accepted for presentation will be programmed into our time-honored high-density sessions. These sessions will feature brief (3-minute) oral presentations of each study followed by author-audience interaction.

Please note, based on positive feedback in recent conferences, high density sessions will continue with a new format of “posters”. Conventional large posters affixed to an upright wall or structure are no longer permitted for high density sessions at ICA conferences. Programmed authors must provide paper hand-outs of their posters (A4-sized, 210 × 297 millimeters or 8.27 × 11.69 inches) to distribute to interested audience members at the session. Optionally they can supplement the hand-out poster with a digital poster, presentation slides, videos, and/or infographics on their personal computer devices, such as tablets and laptops. All presenters will be required to submit their poster digitally prior to the conference.

Student submissions are strongly encouraged. Completed, full papers that are solely authored by students are eligible for the Top Student Paper designation, which will be presented in The Best of Information Systems session. In addition, The Promising Student Research panel will be devoted to another four best student submissions. Both full papers and extended abstracts that are solely authored by students are considered for The Promising Student Research panel. Please do not identify your paper as a student paper within the body of the paper itself. Rather, designate it as a student paper when submitting it using the conference online submission system. The awards are selected based on reviewers’ ratings.

Submission Types

Four types of submissions as described below will be accepted for review. However, only completed full papers (either empirical or theoretical) will be considered for The Best of Information Systems panel at the conference.

Submissions that do not observe page limitations will not be sent for review. Neither will submissions with author identification included in the text or metadata. Submissions with a significant portion of content that has been previously presented at ICA or other conferences will not be reviewed.

We encourage authors to prepare both full papers and extended abstracts in accordance with the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). The submissions will be evaluated on their theoretical and methodological merit, innovation, contribution to the field, and potential relevance to the Information Systems members by three reviewers. The review process is double-blinded.

The four types of submissions are:

Category 1: Completed papers or extended abstracts reporting on new research. This category includes all empirical studies reporting new results. Completed papers are limited to 40,000 double-spaced characters including spaces (approximately 25 pages, double-spaced). Extended abstracts are limited to 6,400 double-spaced characters including spaces (about 4 pages, double-spaced). All character limits exclude references, tables, and figures.

Submission of extended abstracts for review implies acknowledgement by the authors that data will be collected, analyzed to the extent suggested in the abstract, and presented at the upcoming conference regardless of findings.

Category 2: Theoretical or programmatic research papers introduce substantial new syntheses of several related studies (programs of research) or major reviews of important bodies of research. Completed papers are required and are limited to 40,000 double-spaced characters including spaces (about 25 pages, double-spaced). The character limit excludes references, tables, and figures.

Category 3: Panel proposals featuring debates or spotlights on current issues, bodies of scholarly work, or methodologies. Panel proposals should include participants’ names, abstracts of papers, background information on participants, and a justification for the panel. This justification should explain the importance of the topic and why it is of interest to Division members. There is no character limit. As per ICA guidelines, panels must include contributions from at least two different countries, feature gender balance in presenters, and include not more than one contributor from a single faculty, department or school. Panels which do not meet these guidelines will not be considered.

Category 4: Research escalator papers provide the opportunity for feedback and one-on-one mentorship on early work from established scholars in the Division. Please refer to this document from the CAM division to learn more about Research escalator sessions. Research escalator papers should be submitted as extended abstracts limited to 6,400 double-spaced characters including spaces (about 4 pages, double-spaced). All character limits exclude references, tables, and figures. If you would like to be considered for the research escalator session, please do both of the following:

1. 1) On the first page of the extended abstract, please make a note: CONSIDER FOR RESEARCH ESCALATOR SESSION. Also, if you have a preferred mentor or would like a mentor with a specific type of expertise (e.g., methodological expertise), please note this on the first page of the extended abstract.
2. Please send an email to notify Information Systems Division 2023 program planner David Jeong at dcjeong@scu.edu of your submission as a research escalator paper by ICA submission deadline.

Call for Special Paper Topics

Information Systems will be considering special panel topics relevant to our Division for the 2023 conference. While preparing your submission(s), please consider these areas:

Theory advancement and building. Research advancing or proposing specific scientific theories/models concerned with communication processes

Advancing methodology. Research exploring, proposing, comparing specific methodologies aimed at advancing scientific foundations of communication research

Authenticity (ICA 2023 Conference Theme). The role of authenticity as a variable, rather than a constant, in public discourses and popular culture across the globe, and with what relational, social, political, and cultural implications.

Call for Reviewers and the Most Valued Reviewer Award

To ensure the punctuality and quality of our review process, we need a large number of volunteer reviewers. We encourage all faculty members, PhD’s, and doctoral students in the Division to volunteer to review submissions. As we welcome young scholar and student work, we often have more submissions than qualified reviewers. If you submit a paper as a qualified reviewer, you will likely be asked to review. Please facilitate this process, and enroll as a volunteer in the ICA submission site at the time of paper submissions. Please update your ICA member profile, including your research interests, to assist our process of identifying the appropriate reviewers for each submission.

To show appreciation for your volunteer work the Division will recognize top reviewers by presenting the Most Valued Reviewer Award at the Division business meeting. The names of the top reviewers across divisions will also be submitted to the ICA Top Reviewer pool for an opportunity to win a free conference registration.

Division Research Awards

Note: All awards will be presented at the annual business meeting of the Division.

Top Papers of Information Systems

The Division recognizes four top papers based on blinded reviewers’ evaluation, including a Top Student Paper. The four top papers will be presented at The Best of Information Systems session. Only completed papers (either empirical or theoretical) will be considered. To be eligible for the top student paper, each author appearing on the paper must be a student at the time of submission. PLEASE IDENTIFY your paper as a student paper using the option provided by the online ICA submission system, not within the body of the paper itself.

The Best Poster of Information Systems

To motivate the creative and effective use of the new format of high-density poster hand-outs, the Division will select one recipient of the “Best Poster Award.” This award comes with a cash prize of USD $100.

The Division asks each presenter to prepare and bring A4 sized (210 × 297 millimeters or 8.27 × 11.69 inches) paper hand-outs to distribute to interested scholars during their assigned High Density session. Since some members may not have suitable mobile devices to present a digital poster, such presentation is optional. However, the Division expects all presenters to submit a digital copy of their poster prior to the conference via an electronic submission system. If you are programmed, you will be contacted to submit your poster.

Evaluation of all electronic poster entries will be collected from a group of judges after the conference and announced through Division email. For this year, judges are Division leadership members (Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Student and Early Career Representatives, and any incoming elected officers). Judges will assess theoretical and methodological contributions of the research, as well as the broader impacts of the study, as presented in the electronic poster. In addition, formatting coherence, clarity and effectiveness, creativity, and aesthetic value will be considered.

Annie Lang Dissertation Award

Nominations are invited for the Annie Lang Dissertation Award. This annual award recognizes the most outstanding dissertation, defended in the preceding year, focusing on a topic relevant to the Division.

The rules for nominating a dissertation this year are:

The dissertation must be completed and successfully defended with a PhD awarded between 1 January 1, 2022 and 31 December 2022. The author of the dissertation does not need to be a member of the Division but must be an ICA member in order to be considered for the award.

Dissertations must be nominated by the dissertation advisor or a dissertation committee member.

Please be advised that according to new ICA wide policy submitters must choose only one division/interest group to which they submit their dissertation for an award.

Nomination materials should include: (a) full contact information of the author and the nominee, including name, phone number, mailing address, and email address; (b) official proof of the completion of the dissertation along with the completion date; (c) a 500-word abstract of the dissertation; (d) a statement describing the intellectual significance and broad impact of the work and why it is deserving of the award (up to 1000 words); and (e) selected sections of the dissertation, or a paper distilling it, up to 40 double-spaced pages, including references, tables, and figures.

The deadline for receipt of nomination is midnight of 31 January 2023 (Greenwich Mean Time) Submissions must be made electronically in PDF form to Division Chair Dr. Rachel Bailey at rbailey2@fsu.edu using “Lang Dissertation Award Nomination” as the email subject line. Selection is based on evaluation of an award committee. Committee members include Division faculty leadership members (Chair, Vice Chair, immediate past Chair) and selected full professors in the specialty areas as determined necessary by the committee.

John E. Hunter Meta-Analysis Research Program Award

Nominations are invited for the John E. Hunter Meta-Analysis Research Program Award in odd numbered years. The award honors a scholar who has made a significant career or program of scholarship using meta-analysis.

The nominees for this award do not have to be Division members, but must be members of the International Communication Association.

The nomination materials should include the following:

• A letter of nomination, not to exceed two pages, indicating why the research program is significant based on the Division’s mission and the quality of the meta-analysis research program.
• Copies of relevant publications which must indicate the name of the refereed journal, the publication date, the volume, the page numbers, and the doi (digital object identifier) if available, or the presentation title, and the annual conference meeting presentation details as listed in the conference program.
• The author’s brief curriculum vitae, not to exceed four pages.

The deadline for receipt of nomination for the 2023 Conference is midnight of 31 January 2023 (Greenwich Mean Time) Submissions must be made electronically in PDF form to Division Chair Dr. Rachel Bailey at rbailey2@fsu.edu using “John E. Hunter Meta-Analysis Research Program Award” in subject line. The committee for this award will be three Division members appointed by the Division Chair.

The Klaus Krippendorff Book Award

Nominations are invited for the Klaus Krippendorff Book Award in odd-numbered years. This award honors a book published in either of the two calendar years prior to the year of the International Communication Association’s annual conference.

The nominees for this award do not have to be Division members, but must be members of the International Communication Association.

The nomination materials should include the following:

• A nominating letter indicating why the book is significant based on the Division’s mission.
• Selected pages from the book (for the committee’s initial review) not exceeding 25 pages, and the book. Copies of the book must indicate the details of its publication, including the name(s) of the author (if a monograph) or names of the editors (if an edited volume), the date of publication, the name of the publisher, the book’s ISBN or equivalent, and the relevant URL if the book is available electronically.

The deadline for receipt of nomination for the 2023 Conference is midnight of 31 January 2023 (Greenwich Mean Time) Submissions must be made electronically in PDF form to Division Chair Dr. Rachel Bailey at rbailey2@fsu.edu using “Klaus Krippendorff Book Award” in subject line.
